Mary Ellen Hamilton of Huntsville, Alabama was promoted to heaven on September 10, 2023, at age 98. Born and raised in Shuqualak, Mississippi, Ellen met Ernest Henry Hamilton (deceased 2013) at the age of 3. Their relationship led to a wonderful marriage that lasted 71 years! The Hamiltons moved to Huntsville in 1955.
Mary Ellen Hamilton was first and foremost a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Truly, for her to live was Christ! She was known for her ministry of prayer, counseling, and effective Bible teaching. Her wise counsel was sought by many in north Alabama and beyond. Her gifts of service, compassion, patience and unconditional love impacted hundreds of people. Everyone who encountered Ellen Hamilton was made to feel special and treated with great respect.
One of her love languages was expressed in the kitchen. Every meal was carefully prepared with great joy and love. Music to her ears was when someone would ask, “Can I go to the stove for a second plate?!”
Ellen was a devoted and faithful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved her family dearly and she would go to any length to make them feel loved, secure and special.
She was a faithful member of Whitesburg Baptist Church. Before her membership at Whitesburg, she and her husband Ernie were longtime members of First Baptist Church Huntsville. They both served in various capacities but the highlight in ministry was teaching and mentoring young couples in Sunday School.
Ellen is survived by her sons, Duncan Hamilton (wife, Terry) and Doug Hamilton (wife, Shelley); and her daughter, Rosemary Stone (husband, Rick). She was blessed with 11 grandchildren – Ashley, Taylor (deceased), Duncan (wife, Kristen), Katie (husband, Ciff), Meg, JD, Matthew (deceased), Miller, Rachel (husband, Lance), Rebecca (husband, James) and Robby. She also had 10 precious great grandchildren – Ausbon, Ellis, Britton, Jacob, Dylan, Zander, Faith, Levi, Luke and River. Her sincere prayer was for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord!
Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday, September 29 in the Chapel on the south campus of Whitesburg Baptist Church, followed by a Celebration of Life at 2 p.m. The family will have a private graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that these ministries be considered: The Gideons International, Samaritan’s Purse, Alabama Baptist Children’s Home, or the Huntsville Pregnancy Resource Center.
