Mary Ellen Ellett Vaughn, 84, passed away on Monday, September 27. Mary was born on November 28, 1936 and was a life-long resident of Huntsville. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Yancey Vaughn, Jr. and by her granddaughter, Kellie Vaughn Bentley.
Survivors include her three children, Bill Vaughn (Pamela), David Vaughn (Amy) and Susan Terry (Rob); brother, Ted Ellett (Janet); sister, Betty Ernsberger (Ike); three grandchildren, Kristie Edwards (James), Laura Terry, and Mary Kate Terry; as well as three great-grandchildren, Brooks, Lucy, and Isabella.
Mary taught school as a substitute at Blossomwood Elementary for many years. She was a volunteer deputy with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, working in the communications room and in the jail store. She was an avid baker, quilter and specialized in flower arranging. A member of both Holmes Street UMC and Latham UMC, Mary made life-long friends at both places. At Latham, she participated in the Prayer Quilt ministry, making quilts for those that were sick or going through hard times.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 29 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery on Thursday, September 30 at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mary’s favorite charity, St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
