Martha Rebecca Newman King moved into her savior’s arms on Wednesday, August 31st at 1:30 p.m. Daughter of Rufus and Lucy Newman, Martha was raised by grandparents Martha and Henry Lunsford and Aunt Earcy and Uncle Moody Searcy.

She graduated from Andalusia High, class of 1942. She attended and was forever a University of Alabama fan, studying food and nutrition. Married to Charles King September 7, 1946, they moved 18 times before settling in Huntsville. They became one of the NASA families enjoying Apollo launches and becoming a community worshiping at First Baptist Church. Martha was a devoted stay-at-home Mom becoming a Girl Scout leader, first aid lady in the public schools, PTA parent, active participant at Huntsville Obedience Training Center, and active member of Huntsville Botanical Gardens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, her brother Charles Newman and 2 grandchildren, John and Melissa. She is survived by her four children, Rebecca, Chris (friend Barbara), Carolyn (Babs), and Jennifer (Steve); grandchildren, Katy, Daniel, Kimberly, Turner Grace, Jamie Newman, Timothy, Zachary and Matthew; great grandchildren Hailey, Aubrey, Bear, Everett, Avery, Tyler, Taylor, George, Ava and Murphy and her furry companion, Betty Boop.

Granny was devoted to her family, camping with the Squatleys, cooking amazing food, Bible study with Precepts, and always loving her past homes in New York City and Andalusia. Special thank you to her extended family care team who loved her to the very end: Emily Van Vaukenburgh, Anne LaPointe, Barb Plaiss, Janet Hill, and Robin Peary.

Mom always wanted you to know you were loved. You may honor her by donating to Huntsville Obedience Training Center or Huntsville Botanical Gardens.

Visitation will be Saturday, September 3, 2022 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Sunday, September 4, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
