Mamie Killen Pettus, of Greenhill, Ala., went peacefully into Heaven on Aug. 9, 2012,

to be with her Lord Jesus, and our Papa, Thomas Auvie Pettus, for whose loss she has mourned for the past year.

Mamie was born in Loretto, Tenn., on September 25, 1932, “age unknown”, but she always claimed to be “29”. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and also attended Green’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

She devoted her life to her family and loved and cared for each and every one. She was not just a mother, but also a best friend and counselor to her children. Her grandchildren thought of her as a second Mother. Memie loved to spoil her grandkids and made each one of them feel as if they were the only one. When asked for parenting advice, she would say “just love ’em”. Sunday dinner was a special time every week. She nourished her family with great home cooked meals and generous love. No one could make a red velvet cake like our Memie. Born with an artistic touch, she loved to make flower arrangements and beautiful birthday cakes for her family. Our Memie has left behind only good memories of a life well-lived and a Christian example that we hope to pass to our children and grandchildren. We will miss her quick wit, sneaky smile and unfailing love.

Knowing that Jesus is their Savior, gives us peace that Mama and Daddy are together again. They loved to travel, taking many trips to the mountains and to the beach. As on our family vacations, their walks down the beach displayed their walk through this life and right into Heaven; as Daddy would wait for his “Cookie” then take her hand and walk beside the sea, out of sight together.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Pettus will be held on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, at 3:00 p.m. at Loretto Memorial Chapel with Ricky Green and Bill Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Richardson Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Loretto Memorial Chapel.
