Mr. Malachy McCool, 69, went to be with God on the morning of October 31, 2016 while at his home in Tupelo. He was born March 2, 1947, in Dublin, Ireland, to Fionn and Brigid Canning MacCumhaill. He attended seminary in Dublin and was ordained a Catholic priest (CsSp) before coming to New Orleans and later moving to southern Louisiana (which he always referred to as “Bayou Country”) to continue his vocation there. He had very fond memories of Cullman, Alabama where he became sober at the Abby on December 3, 1985. Malachy remained a very strong and active member of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Malachy met Lane in 1992, where he was a speaker at an AA Convention.
Malachy found his true calling as a clinical social worker, getting his Master’s Degree from Tulane University in 1993, and continued his life helping and loving others.
Malachy is survived by his former wife and friend, Lane Senter; his precious children, Brigid McCool Young and Dereck Young, and Colm McCool, all of Tupelo; his step-children, Shawn Summers (Jennifer) of Tupelo and Landon Summers (Jennifer) of Starkville; his sister, Laserina O’Connor, and two brothers, Father Naos McCool and Fionn MacCumbaill, all of Dublin, Ireland. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, and several thousand friends from AA.
Malachy will be honored in a private memorial service at a later date. Holland Funeral Directors, Tupelo Chapel is assisting the family at this time.
