Mahlon Tazewell “Taz” Jones, Jr., 72, of Athens, passed away on August 5, 2021. Taz was born on August 7, 1948 to the late Mahlon Tazewell Jones, Sr. and Margaret Stovall Jones. He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Elizabeth Jones; daughter, Katherine Margaret Jones; sister, Melinda Anne Jones; cousin, Jerry Douthit; and other extended family members.

Taz graduated from the University of Alabama before serving his country for several years as a member of the United States Navy. After completing his tours of service, Taz earned a PhD in clinical psychology from The University of Alabama. His many accomplishments include playing an integral role in engineering mental health treatment for individuals who are incarcerated and in introducing the concept of behavioral medicine to the greater Montgomery area.

A memorial service for Mr. Jones will be Sunday, August 15th, 2021, at 3:00pm at First United Methodist Church’s Beasley Center.

Sadly, Taz’s gifts were eclipsed by serious mental health issues, which affected him and those around him. In lieu of flowers or donations, we ask that you take a moment to learn about the impact of mental illness and the importance of mental health care
