Libby received her VA and MA degree from Alabama A & M University in Huntsville, Alabama. Employed by Redstone Arsenal for 30 years, working as a system analyst for the missile command, Libby was recognized many times over her career for her exemplary service. She retired in 1995. Libby was an active member of the Simpson Point Church of Christ where she taught Sunday school for 50 years, in addition she prepared a bouquet with flowers from her garden for the worship center every Sunday for many years. She had a beautiful singing voice that she enjoyed using every time the church doors were open. As my cousin said, she is giving the angel chorus a run for it’s money. One of Libby’s great passions was flowers and gardening. She was a Master Gardener as She was never happier that when sitting on her back porch with a cup of coffee listening to the birds sing and looking at her flowers, especially if one of her beloved granddaughters was with her. Libby was also one of 19 founding members of the Gunter Mountain chapter of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution. She served as Organizing Chapter Regent form 2006-2009, and was elected Honorary Chapter Regent in 2011. She loved the DAR and the patriotism it stands for.

Libby was married to the late James Clayton Bevel of Grant, AL (deceased March 12, 2011). She was a devoted wife to her cherished “Bev” for 53 years. Their first meeting took place on the campus of Jacksonville State University. Clayton was serving as the Junior class president and Libby’s as the freshman secretary and while planning a dance between the classes the two were introduced. He later told a friend, “I’m going to marry that girl”, and he did. Libby is preceded in death by her parents Weymon and Elizabeth Whatley and her youngest daughter Jeannine Bevel.
