Leroy Oakley, Sr. – Obituary

Leroy Oakley, Sr. was born on August 27, 1932, the son of the late Walter Oakley and Rosie A. Williams Shannon. On May 30, 1954, he was united in marriage to Johnnie Pearl Prim, who survives. Leroy departed this life on July 10, 2017, at the age of 84 years, 10 months, and 13 days.

Leroy served his country in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. He was a member of the masonic lodge. In his lifetime, Leroy worked for Yellow Creek Nuclear Plant in Iuka, Mississippi, Pickwick Dam, Joe Wheeler Dam in Alabama, PCA in Counce, Tennessee as a construction worker, and GT Steven and Gene Austin as a butcher. Leroy attended Dunbar High School, where he played basketball.

In addition to his wife, Leroy is survived by his sons. Lee A. Oakley and wife Aundrea of Savannah, Tennessee, Johnny R. Oakley and wife Vickie of Savannah, Tennessee, and Thomas V. Oakley and wife Claire of Iowa City, Iowa; daughters, Rita Nichols, Cecilia D. Thompson, and Ramona S. Oakley, all of Savannah, Tennessee; a brother, Leonard Shannon, Jr. and wife Demetra of Savannah, Tennessee; a sister, Carolyn Marshall and husband Otis of Flint, Michigan; a step-brother, Billy Williams and wife Edith of Ann Arbor, Michigan; 13 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.

Along with his parents, Leroy was preceded in death by his son, Leroy Oakley, Jr. and his sisters, Rosie Goodlow and Charline Oakley.
