Ms. Kittie Kathleen Berry McDowell, age 79, of Madison, Alabama, passed away on August 17, 2026. She was born in Madison on January 31, 1947, to James L. Berry Sr. and Nora J. Berry.Kittie dedicated more than 30 years to the Russellville City School System, where she encouraged and inspired hundreds of elementary students to believe in themselves. Her compassion, kindness, and dedication left a lasting impression on the lives she touched.
Outside of teaching, Kittie enjoyed gardening, crafts, and art. Following retirement, she continued her commitment to serving others through volunteer work with the Von Braun Civic Center, Meals on Wheels, and other charitable organizations. She was also active in her church and social clubs.
Above all, Kittie treasured her family and especially adored her grandsons. She cherished every moment spent with them and took great joy in watching them grow.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Andrew D. McDowell (Kim) of Huntsville, Alabama; daughter, Amanda M. Lotts (Chris) of Parkton, Maryland; grandsons, Devin (Miranda), Liam, Connor, Riley, and Declan; brother, James L. Berry Jr. (Cindy); and niece, Jamie McGlathery (Chad).
Kittie leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love, faith, service, and devotion to family. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
Visitation and Services
Family and friends may visit with the family on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m.
