Katie Letson Gregg, 91, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 after a brief illness. Katie was the daughter of Thomas Paul Letson and Susie Rosser Letson and grew up in McCalla. She was a ballet dancer and she also enjoyed playing the cornet at McAdory High School, the University of Alabama, and later in the Shoals Community Band. She obtained her Master’s Degree in Education from Alabama and then moved with her husband, Carlos A. Gregg to Sheffield, AL where he began his career in engineering and she taught fifth and sixth grade until she had children. She then enjoyed being a “domestic engineer” and was active in the community and at Sheffield First United Methodist Church where she made many lifelong friends. She had a passion and gift for visiting those in nursing homes as well as those who were homebound.
She was predeceased by her husband, parents, and brothers, Neil Letson, Billy Letson, sister-in-law, Patricia Letson and her two sons-in-law, Ron Garikes and Dan Dunmire.
She is survived by her two daughters, Carla Garikes and Susan Dunmire as well as her sister-in-law, Tommie Letson. She is also survived by five grandchildren, who delighted in eating the special chocolate cake she made for them, Daniel Dunmire of Oxon Hill, MD, Margaret Dunmire of Birmingham, AL, Gregg Dunmire (Kira) of Orlando, FL, Kathryn Critcher (John) of Sterrett, AL and Laura Riley (Andrew) of Hoover, AL. She was also blessed to have three great-grandchildren and many special nieces and nephews.
A graveside service celebrating her life will be held Friday, February 7, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Moore Cemetery in McCalla. Bessemer Brown Service Funeral Home is handling the arrangements, 1300 4th Ave. North, Bessemer, AL 35020 bessemerbrownfh.com.
