joyceJoyce Ann Fuqua Cagle died peacefully at her residence Sept. 27, 2015, just one day shy of her 88th birthday. She was born on Sept. 28, 1927.
Visitation will be today from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home, Athens, Alabama. The funeral will be on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. at Spry Funeral Home chapel, Athens, with Jerry Curry and Steve Klein officiating. Burial will be at the Weaver Cemetery, Rogersville, Alabama.
Mrs. Cagle graduated from Lauderdale County High School in 1945 as the valedictorian. She attended Florence State College and worked at Courtland Air Field until she married her high school sweetheart Eugene Cagle on July 9, 1949. They were married 65 years. She was a wonderful, devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed reading, cooking for her family and taking family trips.
Mrs. Cagle was a Christian and had spent the majority of her life as a member of the New Georgia Church of Christ. She loved and respected God and His word. To her family, she exemplified the characteristics of the virtuous woman found in Proverbs 31, “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her worth is far above rubies.”
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Eugene H. Cagle; parents, Lewis and Osie Fuqua; sisters, Olivia Gautney and Judith Newbern; brother, Lewis M. Fuqua Jr.; and brothers-in-law, Larry Gautney, Tom Zarger and Cowden Horton.
She is survived by her three children, Brenda Joyce Cagle, Rogersville, Richard Eugene Cagle, Rogersville, and Janet Sue Marquis (Jimmy), Acworth, Georgia; grandchildren, Jimmy H. Marquis III (Angela), Marietta, Georgia, Bryant Cagle Marquis (Kathryn), Marietta, Georgia, and Katie Joyce Marquis, Acworth, Georgia; siblings, Jeanette Zarger, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Virginia Horton, Florence, Alabama; sisters-in-law, Ruth Ann Fuqua and Shirley Hargrave (Ernest); brothers-in-law, Don Newbern, Bill Cagle (Hazel) and James McCartney; and nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Marquis III, Bryant Marquis, Keith Fields, Phil Keenon, Derrick Richardson and Kenneth Shelton.
The family would like to thank Mrs. Cagle’s longtime caregivers, Ellen Fuqua and Stacy Jackson. They would also like to thank caregivers Hattie Butler and Ida Fuqua, Amedisys Home Health and Hospice Staff. We send our forever gratitude to our extended family, friends, and our spiritual family at New Georgia Church of Christ for their never ceasing love, prayers and support.
We found in our Mom’s things her valedictorian speech she gave in 1945, where she said, “We have chartered a ship that is now to set sail upon the sea of life. Our destination is uncertain, but we know that when we shall finally arrive in port, although we may not all have attained success. We will be able to say with Paul of old, ‘We have fought a good fight; we have kept the faith; we have finished our course.'” She is now in port and has finished her course with a life well lived and is now able to enjoy her reward with our God.

This obituary is a beautiful tribute. My parents, Ruby and Lindsay Allen, thought so highly of Mrs. Cagle and spoke of her with great admiration. My love and condolences to all the Cagles.
