Joseph “Joe” O’Dillon Breaux, Jr., age 83, died peacefully Thursday, Dec. 25, 2014, at Glenwood Center in Florence, Alabama.

Mr. Breaux was born on Nov. 13, 1931, at South Highlands Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Several years later his family moved to Sheffield, Alabama where he graduated from Sheffield High School. While there, he played in the band. Mr. Breaux graduated from Florence State College, now known as the University of North Alabama. He was one of fifteen students chosen for “Who’s Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” Mr. Breaux was an outstanding science student, president of the Student Government and one of the outstanding ROTC cadets. Mr. Breaux completed two years of medical school at the University of Tennessee at Memphis. He worked in a number of medical labs, but mostly enjoyed working in real estate in his later years. He loved photography, music (played the piano), was a master at chess, loved tennis and history, and loved his family.

Mr. Breaux was the son of the late Berta Breaux Dumas and Joseph O’Dillon Breaux.

He was the brother of the late Carolyn Breaux McCrory (the late John Drake McCrory). Joe is survived by four nieces and a nephew, Nancy McCrory Hill (Gary), of Killen, Alabama, John Smith McCrory, of Birmingham, Alabama, Leslie Dumas McCrory, of Asheville, North Carolina, Bess Rice McCrory, of Birmingham, Alabama, and Jane McCrory Norvell (Lester), of Florence, Alabama; and six great-nieces and nephews, Nathan McCrory Hill, of Birmingham, Alabama, Christopher Breaux Hill, of Killen, Alabama, Handley Breaux McCrory and John Smith McCrory Jr., both of Birmingham, Alabama, and Searcy Cochran Norvell and Caroline McCrory Norvell, both of Florence, Alabama.

There will be a graveside burial at 11 a.m. at Greenview Funeral Home today.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Genesis Healthcare-Glenwood Center, Hospice of the Shoals, Dr. Robert Webb, and Dr. Lyman Mitchell Jr.
