Johnna Leigh Doty of Veto, Alabama, died December 22, 2022, at the age of 59. Johnna is survived by her wife, Mia Alvarez; her brother, Dr. Daniel Doty; her sister, Rena Doty Fraser; her nieces, Sara Jane Doty and Hannah Wells; and her nephew, Nathan Doty. Johnna completed her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Montevallo, and earned her Master’s degree in sound design and music at Boston University. After graduate school, Johnna moved to New York City where she worked Off-Broadway as a sound designer. She returned to Alabama to teach at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where Johnna created the Music Technology program. Above all, Johnna was a prolific singer and songwriter. Her stature was tiny, but her “spitfire” nature was tremendous. Her world was big and her empathy for the human condition limitless. Johnna’s brilliance could be measured in both light and intelligence. Her quick wit was unmatched. Her singular, enchanting spirit left its indelible touch on the lives of everyone who knew her. She will be sorely missed by her family, her lifelong friends, and the many students who called her “Momma.”

I went to school with Johnna at Forest Hills and/or Bradshaw. I always loved her and wondered through the years where she was. I’m so sorry to read this.
