John Stanley Hilburn passed away at age 83 on August 25, 2015, in Alpharetta, Georgia.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lenora Pollard Hilburn; his daughter, Myra Hilburn Berman and her husband, Ed, of Scottsdale, Arizona; his son, David Hilburn and his wife, Sue; and granddaughters, Katharine and Caroline Hilburn, of Roswell, Georgia; and sisters, Betty McCain, of Hoover, and Ann Canter, of Huntsville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Hincy Hilburn and John Roy Hilburn; his brother, Huey Hilburn and sisters, Frances Palmer and Lorene Hitchcock.
John Stanley, a lifelong Crimson Tide fan, was a native of Piedmont, spent much of his working life in Decatur and resided for the past 10 years in Woodstock and Alpharetta, Georgia. He graduated from Piedmont High School in 1951 then went on to earn his BS at Jacksonville State University and his MBA at Athens State University. He was a proud member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War, spent time in the Pacific while participating in Operation Castle, and returned to have a distinguished career with NASA. He was a member of the Northbrook United Methodist Church in Roswell, Georgia, and was interred on September 2, 2015, at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia.
