John S. Powers (Age 88) was born in Scotts Hill, TN to the late Herbert & Helen (Lott) Powers). He is survived by his wife, Lula, Powers of 60 years of marriage, his 2 children Barbara McClure (Husband -Jimmy) and son Greg Powers (Wife Felicia), sister Shirley Greenwell of McEwen, TN; and six Grandchildren Lynn Grice, Brian Grice, Tanner Powers, Brianna Rice, Madison McClure, and Cassie Simpson as well as 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sisters Ruby Nell Patrick, Jewel Faye Powers, and Opal King.
John S. & Lula grew up together (starting in Elementary School in the early 1940’s) They were married in 1964 and lived in their home of Scotts Hill, TN. He attended his home church of Judson Baptist Church for his entire life and served as Song director from 1962-2018. John S. worked at Johnson Controls, Inc. Lexington, TN for 39 ½ years. He was a member of the Cheap Valley Masonic Lodge for more than 60 years. He was raised on his family farm where he spent his entire life. There he raised oxen, and would enter his oxen drawn wagon in Christmas parades in the local West TN areas. He also loved mowing yards and being involved in any outside work activities.
John S. was best known for his involvement in church work as a Song Leader at Judson Baptist Church (Middleburg) and was an avid fan of Southern Gospel Music. He along with his wife Lula had a local gospel quartet that traveled in local churches in West TN going to homecomings, funerals, and revival services. John S. played the guitar alongside his wife for many community events, such as church homecomings, nursing homes, monthly singings, community centers, and benefit singings. He attended thousands of gospel singings all over the country and shared in the message of spreading joy through the “Good News” of Jesus” through gospel music. John S. was also a lifetime Blood donor to the West TN Lifeline Blood Center to see that he provided help to any person anywhere, anytime.
His favorite thing to do throughout the years was to go to the Smoky Mountains and attend the “Singing in the Smokies”. Through this opportunity he was able to impact thousands of lives with his ministry of music and testimony.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 PM, Tuesday, July 22, 2025 at Judson Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Judson Baptist Cemetery with Masonic Services by Cheap Valley Masonic Lodge. The family will receive friend son Monday, 12 – 9 PM and on Tuesday, 10 AM – 1 PM at Pafford Funeral Home in Lexington.
