John Patrick McMullan, 82, of Huntsville passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at the Huntsville Hospital Hospice Family Care Facility after a brief, but intense struggle with cancer.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John and Edna McMullan; sisters, Patricia Murphy and Virginia Torcia; and his son, James Michael McMullan (September 2021).
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Joanne Bongiorno McMullan; children, John T. McMullan (Darlene) of Huntsville, and Jody McMullan Kallal (Justin) of Cheyenne, WY; daughter-in-law, Jennifer McMullan of Birmingham; grandchildren, Jordan Wallace (Colby) of Huntsville, Forrest McMullan (Lynn) of Birmingham, John Reed McMullan (Lilla Bea) of Birmingham, Juliana McMullan, John-Philip McMullan, and Zoe McMullan of Birmingham; sisters-in-law, Diana Kinler (Charles) of Bedford, TX, and Maryann Rosenblum of Long Island, NY, and a host of extended family members, including cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was born on March 9, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York. Upon graduation from St. John’s Prep in Brooklyn, NY, John served with the U.S. Army and was stationed at both Fort Dix, NJ, and Fort Bragg, NC. Afterwards, his career in the space program brought about new adventures. In 1968, he transferred with Bendix Corporation to Huntsville, Alabama. He completed his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Athens State College and earned his master’s degree in technical management from Florida Institute of Technology. His career as an engineer with USBI included a three-year work assignment in Cape Canaveral, FL, where shuttle launches and life at the beach were greatly enjoyed.
An early retirement allowed John and Joanne to return to their home in Huntsville where they resumed being parishioners of Holy Spirit Church since 1968. With more free time, they were able to travel to New York to visit with family and friends. John was also able to pursue his favorite hobbies: fishing, golfing, and tinkering with cars. They eventually owned a home in Florida where they could golf as well as socialize with family members who lived there and participate in the many activities offered.
A private service is planned for the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Huntsville Hospital Hospice Family Care (choose “Hospice Family Care” as the designated hospital unit).
