John Michael “Mike” Whitten, age 64, died March 20, 2016, at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 25, 2016, at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Sammy V. Hughes and the Rev. Billy Curtin officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Gardens with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home and Cremations, a Dignity Memorial provider, directing. Visitation will be today from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was preceded in death by his father, the Rev. John Tolan Whitten, and his wife, Frances; grandparents, Mose and Beulah Whitten and Luther and Martie Burgess; and nephew, Harper Hughes.
Survivors include his spouse, Dixie Darlene Hughes Whitten, of Tuscaloosa; fur babies, Gracie, Callie, Maddie, Morgan, Batman, Brodie, and Bama; mother, Willie Mae Whitten May, of Moundville; brother, Ricky Joe Whitten, of north Alabama; mother-in-law, Nancy Hughes, of Moundville; niece, Nancy Bassett; nephews, Timothy Whitten and Kyle Boswell; and many other relatives.
Mike was born on Feb. 3, 1952, in Hartselle, Alabama. Jesus took his hand to lead him to his heavenly home on March 20, 2016. He retired from Alagasco/Energen Corporation in 2011 with 36 years of service.
Mike graduated in 2001 from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was a board member for Easter Seals West Alabama. He was also a member of many other organizations.
Mike was a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to everyone. We will miss his big heart, big smile, and we all look forward to seeing him again when Jesus takes our hand.
Pallbearers will be Kenny McKalin, Chad Green, Kyle Boswell, Mark Weaver, David Whitten, Timothy Whitten, Brendon Whitten, and Jerry Penn.
Honorary pallbearers are employees of Alagasco, employees of Lewis and Faye Manderson Cancer Center, Tuscaloosa Internal Medicine staff, Tuscaloosa Lung and Sleep staff, Dr. Ford Simpson, Dr. Anne Lewis, employees of DCH MICU third floor and CSICU fourth floor, and past and present employees of Easter Seals West Alabama.
