It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John H. Lary, Jr., M.D., a devoted physician, husband, father, and grandfather. He was 82 years old.

Born in Camden, Arkansas, Dr. Lary was otherwise a lifelong resident of Huntsville, Alabama, where he dedicated his life to the service of others through medicine. Dr. Lary earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University and medical degree from Tulane University, completing his internship and residency at New Orleans’ Charity Hospital. He then returned to Huntsville with his family and established his internal medicine practice, which was his calling and life’s work for 47 years. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and the Madison County Medical Society. Over the course of his respected career, he cared for generations of patients with compassion, integrity, and unwavering dedication.

Dr. Lary was a lifelong seeker of knowledge and enjoyed reading, gardening, sharing time with family and friends, and an eclectic variety of hobbies, interests, and online courses, especially after retirement. His cheerful disposition and ever positive attitude left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his father, John H. Lary, Sr.; his mother, Aline Lary; his brothers, James Lary and Frank Lary; and by his beloved and cherished daughter, Andrea Lary. He is survived by Sherry Shields Lary, his wife of 60 years; his son, Greg Lary (Anne); and his granddaughter, Miranda, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.

A celebration of life will be held at Laughlin Service Funeral Home Chapel in Huntsville, Alabama, on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m.

The family suggests that donations may be made to Huntsville Hospital Foundation or Huntsville Hospital Hospice Family Care, or the charity of your choice.

Dr. Lary will be remembered for a lifetime of service, his deep love for his family, and the countless lives he touched through both his healing hands and his generous heart.
