John Douglas “Doug” Ray, born September 2, 1929, in Elmore County, AL, passed away at his home in Huntsville on September 25, 2022. He was 93 years old.
Doug was preceded in death by parents Clyde and Flora, Lanice, his wife of 55 years, and son, John. Also deceased are four brothers, James, Reginald, Harold, and Morris.
He is survived by daughters, Martha Phillippi (Mac) and Libby McCluney (Scott); granddaughters, Holli Stovall (James), Alesha McCluney, and Cristi McCluney; great-granddaughters, Amanda and Kayleigh Stovall; sisters-in-law, Pat Ray, Lenice Justice, and Julia Westlake; and close friend Elaine McTigue.
Doug was a proud engineering graduate of Auburn University and spent most of his career working for the Army as a civilian at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL. When his work required travel, he drove so he could bring his family along and see the country.
He was an avid fan of water sports and enjoyed boating well into his eighties. He swam and won medals in the state Senior Olympics. He also enjoyed playing cards and other games with family and friends.
Doug was a member of Whitesburg Baptist Church for over 50 years. He served in the children’s department whenever and wherever needed. He loved his family. He loved his church.
Visitation will be held at Laughlin Service Funeral Home on Friday, October 7 from 12 to 2 p.m. followed by the funeral service in the chapel with Brother Guy Morton officiating. Burial will be in Huntsville Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alabama Baptist Children’s Homes, Embrace Alabama Kids, or The Gideons International.
