HILLSBORO-On a warm Saturday in September folks gather at Pond Spring the home of General Joe Wheeler to celebrate his birthday.
They walk the watermelon trail and enjoy his favorite type of cake , a good old-fashion spice cake. They come see re-enactors firing a working Civil War cannon and cavalry re-enactors demonstrating drills on their horses. There was a car show and working honey bee hives as well as a tour of the home and some great county style music.
The Quad Cities Daily enjoyed all the activities and sampled the watermelon and spice cake as well as capturing the festivities in photos. We present them to you here:
