Dr. Joan Rosser Griggs, age 77, of Tuscumbia, died Friday, September 14, 2012. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. The graveside service will be Tuesday, September 18, 2012, at 12:00 p.m. at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery in Covington, Tennessee with Chad Holder officiating.
Dr. Griggs was a member of numerous education organizations including: Mississippi Reading Association, Mississippi Association of School Administrators and the founding president of the Mississippi Association of Women Leaders in Education.
After twenty years as a classroom teacher in Sheffield, Joan received a Doctorate in Educational Administration from Mississippi State University with an emphasis on reading instruction. She served for twenty-two years in various positions in Tate and Desoto Counties of Mississippi, including Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Special Education Supervisor, Gifted Education Coordinator and Assistant Principal. She also served as Adjunct Professor at Ole Miss, Northwest Shoals and Georgia Perimeter College.
Dr. Griggs left a legacy of service to her family and a better education to thousands of children.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Griggs.
She is survived by her son, Daniel Rosser and his wife, Tina and their daughter Charley and by her daughter, Betsey Torres and her husband Carlos and their sons, Chaz and Casey.
