A funeral service for Jo Ann Lewis, age 95, of Harvest, AL will be held at 1 PM on Friday, July 31, 2026, at Higgins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens. Visitation with the family will be from 11 AM to 1 PM on Friday at Higgins Funeral Home.
Jo Ann passed away on July 28, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on April 20, 1931, in Blount County, TN, to the late Cecil Andrew and Martha Ada Fuller Brown.
A natural-born caregiver, Jo Ann was a devoted mother to her own six children and helped raise her younger siblings as well. She did whatever it took to provide for her family. If she had something to give, she gave it freely, and if she didn’t, she always found a way to get it. Her home and heart were always open, treating her children’s and grandchildren’s friends as if they were her own. Once her youngest child entered kindergarten, Jo Ann pursued her passion for helping others by going to nursing school, graduating third in the state of Tennessee as an Advanced LPN.
Jo Ann was bright and energetic, never one to sit idle. Even in her recent years, she stayed active by reading, solving sudoku puzzles, crocheting, and embroidering. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her beloved daughters, Barbara Bennett, Nellie Hopkins, and Sarah (Mike) Quick; her cherished grandchildren, Rex Bennett, Christopher Bennett, Melissa Suddeth, Dana Cagle, Darrin Walker, Amy Brumlow, Sammy Walker, John Walker, Michael Walker, Tina McCollum, Jerry Hopkins, Jr., Shane Hopkins, Roy Brooks, Matthew Quick, Michael Quick, Jr., and Amanda Quick; 38 great-grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; her sisters, Faye McCarmen and Ellie Wolf; and many extended family members.
In addition to her parents, Jo Ann was preceded in death by her husbands, Clarence Walker, Sr., Kenneth Winsett, Bill Lanier, and Kenneth Lewis; her children, Charles Winfield Walker, Clarence Eugene Walker, Jr., and Martha Sue Childers; her grandchildren, Scott Anthony Bennett and Jennifer Hardiman; her great-grandchildren, Will Walker, Brittany Whipple, and Kyson Thomas Spriggs; her twin brother, Jerry Houston Brown; her brothers, Andrew Brown and David Wayne Brown; and her sister, Martha Ada “Peggy” Vanover.
