Jimmie Angela Dawkins, 82, passed away Thursday January 23rd, 2025.

Jimmie was born in Georgia on September 24, 1942, to her father, Master Seargent James Harold Dawkins and her mother, Neva Dawkins. A military brat, she and her family traveled the country, going as far as Long Beach, CA, before they settled in Toney, AL, graduating from Hazel Green High School in 1960. Jimmie went on to study at Auburn University, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. After a brief marriage and a time working in Japan, Jimmie went on to earn her Master of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute in New York.

Jimmie returned to Alabama, and after the birth of her child, started her career as a Fine Arts Professor at Alabama A&M University. In her career she shared her love of art with her students and traveled the world. Jimmie’s love of art and travel took her to England, Italy as well as being twice selected to be a Fulbright Scholar, taking her to India and Japan. Jimmie delighted in sharing her passion for art and was very proud of the successes of her students.

Also a passionate musician, Jimmie was a passionate supporter of the symphony, long time member of her Church Choir, and a talented instrumentalist on recorder, lute, and viola de gama. Much like her love of art, her love of music took her all over the world, studying baroque music as far away as Basel, Switzerland.

After her retirement, Jimmie remained in Huntsville and spent her remaining years pursuing her love of art, music, nature and travel. Active to the last day of her life, Jimmie passed quietly away in her home, in the community she loved, after living a life well lived.

Jimmie is survived by her beloved son, John Michael.

Services will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity and times will be announced.
