Jerald “Jerry” Thomas Moyers, 87,passed away from heart and kidney conditions, in his home in Huntsville, Alabama on August 23, 2021, at 8:31 am. His wife, Patricia, and daughter, Mary, were by his side.
Jerry was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, near the railroad tracks, being nurtured by the sounds of trains going by, on February 26, 1934. His love for trains began at his birth! He was born to Sheridan Lewis Moyers and Carolyn Patricia “Pat” Poling Moyers.
As a teen, he lived in Germany for 5 years, while his father was working with the U.S. Army. He graduated from Heidelberg High School in Heidelberg, Germany in 1952.
He met his first wife, Sydney Wilson, while attending Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. They were married in 1956.
They welcomed their first son, Walter “Sam” in 1958, then James “Jim” in 1960, Thomas “Tom” in 1963 and received a surprise, a daughter, Mary Anne, in 1971.
Jerry graduated from Auburn University in 1959 with a Mechanical Engineering Degree. He was an avid Auburn fan. War Eagle!
Jerry would later marry his second wife, Patricia “Pat” Lee, in 1985. This would expand his family with the addition of four stepdaughters.
Jerry traveled all over the world, servicing nuclear power plants for Westinghouse, then retiring from Savannah River Nuclear Power near Augusta, Georgia in 1995.
Retirement didn’t mean Jerry was going to slow down and take it easy. He was an active member of his church. He and Pat also traveled the United States with their camper as members of the Space Pioneers Good Sam Huntsville Chapter RV Club. He loved seeing this beautiful country and chasing trains from coast to coast. He was very active in the Redstone Model Railroad Club serving as secretary of their board.
Jerry is preceded in death by his father, Sheridan Moyers; his mother, Carolyn Patricia “Pat” Poling Moyers Lenehan; stepmother, Mary Joan Walker Moyers; his nephew, Douglas; previous wife, Sydney Wilson Moyers.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Pat Moyers; children, Sam Moyers of Nashville, Jim (Paula) Moyers of Lynn Haven, Florida, Tom (Bobbie) Moyers of Pittsburgh. ,Pennsylvania, and Mary Anne (Richard) Walters of Alabaster, Alabama; and his brother, James Moyers of Sun City Center, Florida; half-brother, Michael (Fran) Lenehan of Bloomfield, New Jersey, and nephew, Scott (Kate) Moyers of Brooklyn, NY. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he loved very much. Stepdaughters: Lori Robbins, Lee Manning, Shawnae Ellsworth-Bratz and Nancy Lewis, also survive him.
Jerry’s Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at Weatherly Road Assembly of God, 1001 Weatherly Road SE in Huntsville, Alabama. The famly is inviting Jerry’s friends to share their special memories at his Celebration of Life.
