Jean Thornton Jean Thornton, aged 85, of Athens, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 11th, 2025, at her residence. Born on February 14th, 1940, in Belvedere Township, Michigan, she was the daughter of Orin Lester Deakins and Rilla Sarah Mosher Deakins.

Jean is survived by her children, David Brian Thornton (Ruth), and Cheri Lynn Thornton-Conner, married to Donald. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Christopher Jason Pate, married to Tanya; Bryan Pate, married to Danielle; Angela Romans, married to Cory; and Melissa Thornton (Dustin). She was also a proud great-grandmother to Lily, Emma, Lucas, Mya, and Alayna Pate. Jean is remembered by her brother Melvin Deakins, married to Barbara, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who held a special place in her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Larry Deakins, and her sister Betty Adams.

Jean was a remarkable woman with a deep affection for animals and nature. Her love for dogs, cats, and all living things was evident in her daily life and the kindness she extended towards them.

To honor her memory, a memorial service will be held on August 16th, 2026, at the home of Ruth Haines in Warsaw, Indiana. Friends and family are invited to gather to celebrate Jean’s life and the beautiful
