Funeral service for Jay H. Blaxton, 82, of Decatur, will be Thursday, June 29, 2017, at 10 a.m. at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with Reverend Marvin McCormick officiating and Shelton Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends today from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery.
Jay answered his Father’s call home at his residence on June 24, 2017, after an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dawson and Ouida Blaxton; three brothers, Paul (Mildred), Garland (Mae) and Edgar; one sister, Catherine Holland (Neal Sr.); and a number of nephews and nieces.
He was a Shriner, transporting sick children to Shriners Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina; 59-plus-year Mason, belonging to Hartselle Nunn-Oden Masonic Lodge and the Decatur Masonic Lodge. He was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church, serving as a minister in his earlier years, and proudly served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was the owner of OK Barber Shop in Decatur.
Jay is survived by his wife, Gloria; son, David (Amy); daughter, Deborah Honaker (Michael); brother, Jerold (Joan); sister, Jean McKelvey; sister-in-law, Rita Blaxton; four grandchildren, Robert Honaker (Elizabeth), Laura Honaker, Alanna Blaxton and Dawson Blaxton and several great-grandchildren.
