Jane Johnson Hamm Mashburn Jane Johnson Hamm Mashburn passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 5th at Barfield Health Care in Guntersville, Alabama, after several years of declining health due to suffering strokes.
Born in Guntersville, Alabama on November 20, 1948, Jane grew up in Arab, Alabama and graduated from Arab High School in 1967 where she was a flagger. Jane graduated from Jacksonville State University and taught Elementary Education for several years at Union Grove. During these years she also played piano and organ at Arab First Baptist Church. In 1980 she married Charlie Hamm, the steel guitar player for the Statler Brothers, and moved to Staunton Virginia, where she lived for seventeen years. After the death of her husband Charlie, Jane returned to her native Arab and once again became a beloved member of the community, eventually marrying John Mashburn. She worked for many years at H&R Block where many people remember her as their “favorite tax person”! Jane enjoyed traveling with friends, collecting cookbooks and trying new dishes, and hunting for bargains. Jane’s faith was important to her, and she was a member of Arab First Baptist Church for many years.
Jane was dedicated to her family and leaves behind her husband, John Mashburn, her nieces, Jan Owen (Matt), Kelly Barnett (Kenny), and Kasey Dunkin (Michael). She is also survived by a stepdaughter, Tina Hannah, and a stepson John Mashburn, Jr. as well as many great nieces and nephews, beloved cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charlie Hamm, her parents, Roy and Gladys Johnson, her brother and sister-in- law Neal and Linda Johnson, and her brother, Roy Wayne Johnson.
The family wishes to express our profound appreciation and respect to all who helped provide care for Jane during her illness, including her many sitters through the years and the nurses and staff at Barfield Health Care.
A funeral service will be held at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel in Arab, Alabama on Monday, February 9th with visitation at 10:00 and a service at 11:00 am. Burial will follow in the Arab Memorial Cemetery. Randy Evers, Gary Beam, and her niece, Jan Owen will officiate. Serving as pallbearers are Orby Barkley, Glenn Brock, Donald Brooks, Larry Dyar, Martha Harvell, Megan Harvell, Tina Hannah, and Jan Owen. Honorary pallbearers are Matt Dennis, Lynn Alexander, and Arab High School Class of 1967.
