James Wiley Wood, Jr., 90 of Huntsville, Alabama passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024.
Mr. Wood is survived by his wife, Betty Moore Wood; children, Pamela Wood Hardy (Bryan), Jamielee Wood Gates (Dehaan), David Wayne Wood (Johnna), John Mark Wood (Dawn), Gregory Stuart Wood, and Shaun Bruce Wood (Carissa); 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded by his parents, James Wiley Wood, Sr., and Zelma Neola Wood; and brother, A. Wayne Wood.
James was born April 24, 1934, in Friona, Texas.
He graduated from Grand Canyon College, in Phoenix, Arizona with a bachelor’s degree.
In 1954, Mr. Wood was stationed at Redstone Arsenal as an Army instructor in the Ordinance Guided Missile School.
James attended Fifth Street Baptist Church where he met his future wife and began a love story for the ages. James and Betty celebrated 68 years of marriage together and a lifetime of answered prayers.
Throughout his lifetime he always found a place of service in the church from being a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and singing in the choir along with various other areas where he felt called to serve. He was currently a member of the First Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama.
For over 35 years, James worked for General Electric and Ericsson as a software engineer. He retired at the age of 58.
The family surrounded Dad’s bedside as he entered the Glory of the Lord on the afternoon of Friday, May 31, 2024. He was finally able to hear those sweet words “Well done my good and faithful servant”. He has laid down his armor and now we must carry the torch. May all who come behind us, find us faithful. He was a true hero of the faith and our family. He loved beyond measure and led a blessed life of answered prayers. His passion was for God, Family, and the church.
A visitation for Mr. Wood will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at Berryhill Funeral Home from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. The funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 pm in the chapel with Pastor Dave Wood officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers are James Dehaan Gates, Shaun Michael Gates, Stuart Desso Gates, John Michael Wood, Hunter Wiley Wood, and Kevin Blake Ellis.
