James Wesley “Big Jim” Lynch, 79, of Athens, Alabama, passed away at his residence on October 11, 2026. He was born on April 24, 1947, in Danville, Virginia, to James and Geraldine (Craig) Lynch.
Jim and his wife, Brenda, shared nearly 57 years of marriage. They would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary at the end of November—a lifetime together built around their family and the life they shared.
Jim served in the United States Army, including service in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968 as a .50-caliber gunner with the River Rats. He was honorably discharged in 1969. He was also a member of Cowboy Church of Limestone County.
To his family, Jim was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and mentor. Strong, tough, and no-nonsense, he could be intimidating, but he also had a laid-back side that those close to him knew well. As a father to Mike, Amy, Jimmy, and Wesley, he offered strength, guidance, and lessons that left a lasting mark on their lives. He was more than the hardships he carried or the illness he faced. He was Dad, and that is how his children will remember him.
Jim is survived by his wife, Brenda Lynch of Athens; daughter, Amy Cecil and her husband, Michael, of North Carolina; sons, James Lynch II and his wife, Abby, of Athens, and Michael Carl Lynch and his wife, Kala, of West Palm Beach, Florida.
He is also survived by his grandchildren: Tyler Cecil, Shelby Grant, Luke Cecil, Jasmine Young Lynch, Timothy McFarland, Ethan Lynch, Molly McFarland, Zuri Lynch, Tallulah Lynch, Winter Lynch, Killian Lynch, Thatcher Lynch, Scout Lynch, Noble Lynch, Leonidas Lynch, Ivy Lynch, Phoenix Lynch, Braxton Lynch, Dylan Lynch, and Charlotte Lynch; and his great-grandchildren, Kayden Young Lynch and Landry Grant.
He was preceded in death by his son, Wesley.
Jim also leaves behind his devoted service dog, Lady.
His strength, his presence, and the lessons he passed down will remain with the family who loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 14th, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. CST at the Cowboy Church of Limestone County, 26159 Thach Road, Athens, AL 35613.
