James Russell Box – Obituary

James Russell Box, age 75 died Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Helen Keller Hospital after a brief illness. Visitation will be Thursday, 5-7 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. His funeral service will be Friday, 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, Sheffield with the Reverends Randy Burbank and Sam Hardie officiating.

Mr. Box was an active member of First United Methodist Church, Sheffield for many years. He was co-owner of Ashe Box Insurance Agency and was in the insurance business for over fifty years. He was an active in the Shoals area. He was a member and past president of the Sheffield Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was an inductee of the Sheffield Education Foundation Registry of Honor. The Sheffield Kiwanis Club honored him as the Sheffield Citizen of the year in 2006 and was past president of Turtle Point Yatch and Country Club. He served many years on the Sheffield Civil Service board as chair and secretary and was a member of the Sheffield Education Foundation Board. He was a gifted athlete in many sports. He excelled at football, baseball, basketball and golf. He received numerous awards and recognition for his athletic abilities. He was a graduate of Sheffield High School and the University of Alabama where he played college football for Coach Paul Bryant. He was a member of the A Club. He was an inaugural inductee of the Colbert County Sports Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Griffith Box of Sheffield; daughters, Elisabeth Box Barnett (Sam) of Decatur and Katherine Box Bendall (Clay) of Tuscumbia; grandchildren, Elisabeth Russell Bendall, Victoria Grace Simpson, Katherine Leland Barnett, Samuel William Barnett Jr.; brother, William “Sparky” Box (Sandra) of Tomball, TX: sister-in-law, Carolyn Griffith of Yorktown, VA; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are Fred Ashe, John Blackwell, Charlie Grimmitt, James Marks, Blake Martin, Gardiner Pickens, Ian Sanford, and James Wesson.

Honorary Pallbearers are Buck Alexander, Billy Don Anderson, Braxton Ashe, Tommy Brocato, Joe Cooney, Bobby Hurst, David Ladner, Hartwell Lutz, Mims Rogers and Jay Treadwell.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Sheffield First United Methodist Church, the Sheffield Public Library or the charity of your choice.
