James “Jim” Lewis Skinner peacefully passed away on April 6, 2025 at Floyd E. Tut Fann Veterans Home in Huntsville, AL at the age of 91.
Born on April 18, 1933 in Fort Thomas, Kentucky to parents Harold and Ruth Skinner, Jim grew up in a military family moving across the United States. He chose to follow in his fathers footsteps and started his own career in the Army Reserves.
Prior to beginning his military career he attended the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington, VA. During his time at VMI he met the love of his life, Sue. He graduated from VMI in 1955 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. After graduation, he married Sue on January 15, 1956. Jim began his military career in the Army Reserves within the year and it led to a life of adventure for Jim and Sue.
Throughout his military career, Jim and Sue moved across the country to many states and even were stationed in Germany for a period of time. As Jim’s successful military career progressed and his accomplishments grew, so did Jim and Sue’s family. During his career they welcomed their three children, Kathy, Peggy, and Jamie. Together the family supported Jim and his career. Jim received many recognitions for his service as he proudly served his country with grace and dignity. After 20 years of service, he retired as a lieutenant colonel and a veteran of the Vietnam War. Jim and the family made their final move before retirement and settled in Huntsville, AL.
During Jim’s time in Huntsville he was an active member for many years at Southside Christian Church. The one thing he loved more than anything on this earth was his dear wife, Sue. They spent every moment together and the love they had for one another was evident to everyone who knew them. They were married for 68 wonderful years.
Jim spent his final years at Floyd E. Tut Fann where he was cared for by the incredible staff. He loved to share stories and jokes with anyone he came into contact with. Two things about Jim that he will always be remembered for are how much he loved his family and the love and loyalty he had for his country. He will be missed and fondly remembered by his family and all who had come to love him.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Sue Skinner; his parents, Harold Sr. and Ruth Skinner; and his brother, Harold Jr. He is survived by his children, Kathy Boone (Daniel), Peggy Ashby (Dean), and Jamie Skinner (Amanda); seven grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
