James Edward Gibson was born November 18, 1944 in Mosier, IL to the late Floyd and Ethel Laird Gibson. He was united in marriage to the former Patricia Joyce Staggs on June 17, 1978. He was a proud father to nine children: Shannon, Darren, Sara, Amber, Kholbie, James Jr., Kathy, Tina, and Chris. When he was able, he enjoyed going to auctions to see what bargain he might could find and spending time fishing. However, nothing in his life was more precious than the time he was able to spend with his grandchildren. Mr. Gibson departed this life at his home on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 making his stay in this life some 81 years, 11 months, and 2 days.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Patricia Joyce Staggs Gibson of Iron City, TN; children: Shannon Gibson (Tiffany) of Lexington, AL; Darren Gibson (Cherokee) of Iron City, TN; Sara Odell of Florence, AL; Amber Gibson of Killen, AL; Kholbie Gibson of Iron City, TN; James Gibson, Jr. of Granite City, IL; Kathy Jackson of Bland, MO; Tina Foster; Chris Moerlien (Tonya) both of Granite City, IL; He is also survived by several grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Russell, Jack, and Clinton Gibson
Visitation with the Gibson family will be on Thursday, October 22, 2026 from 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Funeral Services will be conducted on Thursday, October 22, 2026 beginning at 3:00 PM at Bates-Love Funeral and Cremation Chapel with James Yarbrough officiating.
In keeping with Mr. Gibson’s wishes, after services he will be cremated.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested those who wish to make memorial donations do so to Mrs. Patricia for her future expenses in his absence.
