James Carl Shewbart, Sr., 95, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at his residence. He was born on March 21, 1931, in Burnout Community to Carl Shewbart and Susie Lynn Weatherbee. He graduated from Vina High School, then attended Auburn University, graduating with his bachelor’s degree in 1952. He later went on to receive his master’s degree. He married Patricia Ann Vinson on March 27, 1952, and they had three children. They were married for 64 years. James and Pat were members of Burnout Missionary Baptist Church. James enjoyed being “Pop” to his large family. He grew up farming, raising cattle, and tending to his garden. He spent many years enjoying working in his shop, where he custom-built furniture. James was a proud member of and traveled with Good Sam Camping Club. James and Pat traveled to all 50 states. James worked as an agribusiness teacher with a majority of his 30-year career at Speake High School. His achievements include being voted teacher of the year by Alabama Vocational Agribusiness Teachers Association, Honorary American Farmer Degree in 1981, Future Farmers of America advisor, and National Charles Prizer Award.
Funeral service will be Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 4 p.m. at Burnout Missionary Baptist Church, Vina, AL with Bro. Billy Nichols officiating. Visitation will be Saturday, September 26, 2026, from 2–4 p.m. at Burnout Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Red Bay City Cemetery. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL will be in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his three children, Carl Shewbart, Jr. (special friend Jane Hindman), Lynn Bolton (Robbie), and Mike Shewbart (Wanda); eight grandchildren, Hannah Parker (Jamison), Rachel Carter (Jordan), Bart Bolton (Melissa), Casey Bolton, Brooke Shewbart, Lane Shewbart, Britta Howard (Nick), and Brooke Binning (Bobby); fifteen great-grandchildren, Emmalyn, Lucy, Hunter, Katelyn, Xavier, Sawyer, Katie, Kenzley, Kolby, Bryson (Journee), Austin, Cashton, Alice, Lillian, and Frances; one brother, Forbus Shewbart; and one sister-in-law, Anne Vinson.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and sister-in-law, Louise Shewbart.
Pallbearers will be Bart Bolton, Casey Bolton, Lane Shewbart, Jamison Parker, Jordan Carter and Hunter Harbin.
