James Arlyn Adkins, age 91, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 8th, 2016 at home.
A graveside funeral service will be held Thursday November 10, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at New Horizon Memorial Gardens in Dora. Reverend Lee Taylor will officiate.
Mr. Adkins was born November 30th, 1924, in Bremen, a son to James Otis Adkins and Eula Roberts Adkins. He married Vonda Lee Brown Adkins on May 4th, 1946, in Birmingham. She passed away March 3rd, 2002.
Surviving are his son Robert Adkins of Winfield, and his wife, Melinda, and their two daughters, Leslie and Lori; his daughter, Susan Bunn of Birmingham, and her husband, Buddy Bunn, and their daughters, Heather and Holly; and his late daughter’s three children, Lee Baldwin, Laura Williams and Chris Williams; and his great-grandchildren, Clay, Reagan, Madison, Parker and Michael.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his three sisters, Wynelle Ward, Doris Ratliff, and Billy Smith, and his dearly loved daughter, Carolyn Adkins Williams.
Mr. Adkins graduated from Berry High School in Rome, GA in 1942. He then honorably served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II from 1943 to 1946 in the South Pacific and Iwo Jima. When he returned from military service, he began his successful, 40-year career with the Alabama Power Company, from which he retired as district manager in 1987.
Mr. Adkins has been a proud and committed member of Dora First Baptist Church since 1969, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher, and he was an active civic leader in his community.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Dora First Baptist Church.
