J HUGH MORELAND

J. Hugh Moreland, age 81, of Starkville, MS, passed away on December 26, 2021 at his home after a lengthy battle with cancer.

In light of Covid concerns, a graveside service will be held at Oktibbeha Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. for immediate family with Rev. Jason Middleton and Rev. Clifton Curtis officiating.

Mr. Moreland was born December 20, 1940 in Calhoun County, MS to the late J.Z. and Jessie Moreland. He retired as a partner from VanLandingham Lumber Company and then worked part-time at Phillips Hardware, West Point and Discount Builders of Starkville.

He loved to fish, work in the yard, and build small furniture in his shop.
He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a Greeter and taught a Sunday School Class. His love and faith in Jesus Christ were a true reflection in how he served his family and others.
He loved gospel music and sang in a quartet in his younger days. Hugh earned his Christian Education Certificate and Church Music Certificate from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and was Minister of Music at Calvary Baptist Church in Starkville and Trinity Baptist in West Point for a number of years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son John Scott Moreland.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mazie Wilson Moreland, sons Hugh Stanton Moreland of Starkville and Bradley Garren Moreland of Starkville, brothers, Bob Moreland of Tucson, AZ, Charles Moreland (Barbara) of Downsville, LA, and Jerry Moreland (Rhonda) of Ada, OK.

Memorials may be made to Children’s Building Fund at First Baptist Church, Starkville, MS, or American Cancer Society.

Graveside services are scheduled for Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Garden Park Cemetery in Starkville, MS. Rev. Jason Middleton and Rev. Clifton Curtis will conduct the service.
