dscn1627HUNTSVILLE-Today the National Weather Service (NWS) in Huntsville held a ceremony designating Huntsville International Airport (HSV) as the 12th airport in the country – the only in the Southeast, mind you – to be StormReady® certified. So what does this mean exactly?

National Weather Service in Huntsville presents StormReady certificate to Huntsville International Airport’s Director of Operations, Kevin Vandeberg.

HSV and NWS have always worked closely together when inclement weather is possible. The communication between our two organizations is incredible and something StormReady® has only helped strengthen. Being StormReady® means the airport’s plans, procedures, methods of communication and training meet the requirements NWS sets forth in severe weather preparedness. To the airport’s passengers, employees and tenants, it means:

– We have an operations center staffed 24-hours a day available to monitor and alert those in our facility of severe weather. weather map huntsville

– We have multiple ways to receive critical severe weather information, like warnings, from the NWS.

– And we are prepared 24-7 to get information out to our public audiences.

– We support and promote the importance of public readiness when it comes to severe weather.

– We have an approved formal hazardous weather plan, including designated areas at the airport marked as safety areas in times of weather situations.

We’ve all seen the devastation mother nature can have on our area.  In fact, April 3 and 4 marks the 40th anniversary of the 1974 tornadoes known as the “super outbreak” in our area (read complete coverage recapping this from the NWS (here). The NWS does an incredible job of monitoring these situations, and we at the airport, are proud to support this effort by sharing those warnings with everyone in our facility and helping them find shelter.
