Herman “Dalton” Gaines, age 84 years, a resident of rural Simpson (the Flatwoods community), passed away Saturday afternoon, November 19, 2022, at 4:55 PM at the Ray and Kay Eckstein Hospice Care Center in Paducah, Kentucky.

Dalton, as he was known to family and friends, was born February 25, 1938 in Decherd, Tennessee. He was the son of Leslie and Charlotte (Gillespie) Gaines. The family lived in Estill Springs, Tennessee for 10 years.

Dalton was formerly united in marriage to Ova Sue Bean who resides near Simpson.

Additionally, he is survived by: a daughter – Teresa Gaines Stapleton and her husband Randall; a granddaughter – Jessica Stapleton Neihoff and her husband Beau; and a great grandson – Bryce Neihoff all of the Flatwoods community. Dalton is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

In addition to his parents, Dalton was preceded in death by an infant brother – William Leslie Gaines, Jr., a brother – Wesley “Buster” Gaines, a sister – Mary Edith Gaines Walls, and a nephew – Greg Gaines.

Dalton was a graduate of the Franklin County Tennessee High School. He moved to the Chicago suburbs in 1967. Dalton attended Triton College in River Grove, Illinois in 1974-1975. He then transferred to the University of Illinois in Chicago, where he studied business administration for four years, prior to his graduation with a degree in management development. He was employed in the management division of GTE Communications Systems Corporation/AG Communication in Northlake, Illinois from 1967 until his retirement in 2007.

In 2017, Dalton moved to the Flatwoods community in rural Johnson County where he lived near his beloved family.

Dalton enjoyed hunting and fishing. He had enjoyed working on televisions and watching sporting events.

Dalton was of the Baptist faith.

A service honoring the life of Herman Dalton Gaines will be conducted Monday afternoon, November 28, 2022, at 12 Noon at the Moore-Cortner Funeral Home, 300 1st Avenue Northwest, Winchester, Tennessee.

Burial will follow in the Franklin Memorial Gardens in Winchester, Tennessee.

Visitation will be conducted Friday, November 25, 2022, from 5 PM – 7 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, Illinois. Additionally, there will be a time of visitation Monday, November 28, 2022, from 10 AM – 12 Noon at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home in Winchester, Tennessee.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5 Schiber Port, Suite C., Maryville, Illinois 62062.
