TUSCUMBIA – Helen Keller Public Library has joined more than 7,000 libraries across the country to celebrate the celestial event of the century, the August 21, 2017 Solar Eclipse.

The library and its partners provided solar eclipse viewing glasses for Deshler High School students and Shoals residents who gathered at Spring Park in Tuscumbia to view the Great American Eclipse.

Joel Kendrick, Tuscumbia Parks and Recreation director said the event was a huge success with more than 2,000 people in attendance.

“We are proud that Helen Keller Public Library was a part of this national program,” said Librarian Tammie Collins “We partnered with Tuscumbia Parks and Recreation Department, Colbert County Tourism and local civic clubs, a church and other organizations to help our community participate in this amazing astronomy event. We think everyone who attended will remember it for the rest of their lives.”

The park’s light and water show played music with a sun or eclipse related theme during the event.

Susann Hamlin, president and CEO of Colbert County Tourism and Convention Bureau, said the eclipse viewing party was a memorable event.

Helen Keller Public Library joined the STAR Library Education Network (STAR_Net) and its NASA@ My Library initiative, which are providing resources and STEM activities to libraries across the nation related to the eclipse. Partners include NASA, the American Library Association, and many other organizations. This project was made possible through support from the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Google, and the National Science Foundation.
