Harry Robert Johns, age 96, of Greenbrier, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2026 at The Waters of Springfield. Mr. Johns’ wishes were to be cremated and there are no services scheduled at this time.
Mr. Johns was born June 5, 1929, in Malden, Massachusetts, to the late Harry Orsmund Johns and the late Eunice Elizabeth Caron Johns. He was lovingly known as “The Bread Man”, having worked and delivered for the Wonder Bread Company for over 30 years.
Harry was a sweet, kind soul, and a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He always kissed the back of every lady’s hand, had a firm handshake for every man, and a hug for all. He positively touched the lives of everyone he met in his long, full life, and was dearly loved by everyone who knew him.
His character can be summed up with a quote from the Wizard of Oz when he spoke to the Tin Man, “A heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others.”
The last few months of his life, he was often heard saying, “I love you. Give me a hug.”
In addition to his parents, Mr. Johns was preceded in death by his loving wife, Patricia Elizabeth Nielsen Johns.
He is survived by his children, Harry Niels Johns and his wife Carol, Michael Barry Johns and his wife Denise, Kathleen “Kathy” Johns and her husband Jim Breckels, and Russell Thomas Johns.
Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Greenbrier is in charge of these arrangements.
