This Obituary was lovingly written by Gwen’s family.
Gwen Barber passed away, leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion, faith, and cherished memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Gwen was the daughter of the late Marie Mashburn and Grady Mann. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jerry Barber, and her son, Randall Barber. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Suzie Barber; granddaughter, Alisha Beard, and her husband, Zachary Beard; and five great-grandchildren, Natalie Beard, Lydia Beard, Heath Beard, Kennadi Beard, and Livi Kate Beard. Gwen dedicated much of her life to caring for others through her career as an oncology nurse. She retired from Cooper Green Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, after years of faithfully serving patients and their families. Nursing was more than a profession for Gwen; it was an opportunity to extend kindness, compassion, and comfort to those facing some of life’s most difficult moments. Gwen was a member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Homewood, Alabama, where her Christian faith was an important part of her life. Gwen’s life was marked by service, generosity, and a heart for others. She spent her years caring for the sick, loving her family, and creating memories that will be passed down for generations. Although her earthly journey has come to an end, the love she gave, the lives she touched, and the memories she created will continue to live on. Her hands spent a lifetime caring for others, and her heart leaves behind a lifetime of love. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her family and all who were blessed to know her. Visitation will be Friday, October 16, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Nichols Funeral Home, in Haleyville, Alabama, where the funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Botush Cemetery in Haleyville, Alabama.
