George Taramangos was born April 23, 1939 in Memphis, TN, son of the late Mr.& Mrs. Louis Taramangos. Visitation will be Friday, 6-8 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. His funeral service will be Saturday, 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, followed by burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Sheffield.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Allen Taramangos, who passed away just 14 months ago. He is survived by their children, Stephanie Taramangos Rhodes, husband Don Rhodes of Silverhill, AL; Gina Taramangos Stavredes and husband Kevin Stavredes of Raleigh, NC; George Leigh Taramangos of Augusta, GA, and eight grandchildren, Amelia, Hannah, Iain, and Aaron Rhodes of Silverhill, AL; Zoe and Pete Stavredes of Raleigh NC; Nick and Alley Taramangos of Augusta, GA. He is also survived by three loving sisters, Gaye Dixon of Muscle Shoals, Al; Elaine Carter of Jasper, Alabama and Sophia Zumbro of Augusta Ga, along with a several nieces and nephews and a host of surrogate like children that he and Barbara unselfishly would house and mentor on a regular basis.
George was a stellar athlete in all sports he played growing up and especially excelled in football where he was a standout player for Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, TN. He was the epitome of a family man, very devoted, honest, loyal, with a level of integrity above reapproach who always put others before himself – a True Southern Gentleman. This was well demonstrated by his 51 faithful years of marriage, including the last 12 years as a diligent and loving care giver for the love of his live, Barbara, while she struggled with Vascular Dementia; 41 years of as loyal, honest and hard working employee of Reynolds Metals and later Wise. While at Reynolds he risked his own life to save the lives of several other employees on two different occasions, including one time with a fiery explosion that cost him 2nd & 3rd degree burns.
In addition to his family and friends, his other passions were for golf and Tennessee Vols football. He will be well remembered and revered for his mentor-like attributes of a loving and devoted Christian family man and his selfless acts. May His Memory Be Eternal.
