Mr. George “Bert” Johnson, Jr., 81, died Friday, August 25, 2017 at North MS Medical Center following a brief illness. He was born January 17, 1936 in Pontiac, Michigan, to George Bert Johnson, Sr. and Ora Mable Gandy Johnson. He was a 1954 graduate of Nettleton High School and attended Itawamba Junior College (ICC). Bert worked as a welder, employed by General Motors for 30 years before retiring. He greatly enjoyed his most recent job as a security guard employed by Securitas until his death.
Bert married Margaret “Peggy” Neubeck on May 28, 1982 in Pontiac, MI and they moved to Plantersville, MS after his retirement. He loved his family, especially his children and grandchildren. His grandsons were affectionately known to him as “Rootin Tootin” and “Big Jake”. He enjoyed spending time with them, working around the yard, and attending church.
A celebration service honoring his life will be at 11 AM, Monday, August 28, 2017 in the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Bro. Warner Collier officiating. Private burial will follow in Union Cemetery south of Plantersville. Visitation will be Monday from 10 AM to service time only.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Johnson of Plantersville; daughters, Amanda Tumacder (Derek) of Florence, AL, Robin Matkin of Tupelo, and Andrea Elder (Jeff) of New Albany; brothers, John T. Johnson (Peggy) and James M. Johnson (Lynne), all of Plantersville; sisters, Sharon Ellis of Tupelo and Brenda Collier of Mooreville; grandsons, Aiden Tumacder and Jacob Matkin; a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Frank Johnson and sister, Margaret Collier.
