Garland D. Johnston – Obituary

Garland D. Johnston, 85, of Huntsville, passed away Sunday. Mr. Johnston was a 1957 graduate of the University of Arkansas and joined NASA in 1962. During his 34 years in the Structural Dynamic Test Lab, he developed and discovered numerous new scientific processes in the structural testing of flight hardware. In 1991, he was honored for his accomplishments by being awarded the Silver Snoopy Award. Mr. Johnston was former Forgemaster of the Huntsville Blacksmith Association and was a member of Mayfair Church of Christ.

Survivors include his son, L. Dean Johnston and wife, Cindy, of Huntsville; grandchildren, Alex Johnston, Ben Johnston, and Keeli Williams and husband, David, all of Huntsville; adopted grandson, Blake Baker; brother, Don Johnston and wife, Nina, of Stella, MO; nephew, Davis Johnston of St. Augustine, FL; and niece, Julie Johnston of Joplin, MO.

Visitation will be from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the chapel with Dr. Gary Bradley officiating. Burial will be in Huntsville Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Madison Academy or Wounded Warriors.
