Gardner Sewell Hall, Jr. passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday, July 26, at 96 years of age. His passing followed a slow period of decline brought on by old age. His wife, Caneta Philpot Hall, preceded him in death in 2020.
Sewell, as he was generally known, was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on June 20, 1930, to Gardner Sewell Hall Sr. and Gartrell Mitchell Hall. He is survived by his five children: Cherry Hall Trimble (John) of Stone Mountain, GA; Gardner Sewell Hall III (Beverly), of Port Murray, NJ; Holly Hall Cabina (Larry), of Valrico, FL; Rose Lynn Hall Caudill (Barry), of Norcross, GA; and Sara Hall Haynes (Danny), of Tucker, GA. Two siblings survive him: Lillian Hall Perkins, of Madison, AL, and William (Bill) Hall, of Hartselle. Alabama. One sister, Mary Faye Hall Headrick, preceded him in death. He had eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Sewell Hall dedicated his life to preaching the gospel of Christ, working on a regular basis for congregations in six states in the South and Northeast. He also lived in Nigeria, West Africa, and Tonbridge, England. Sewell Hall made numerous visits to encourage congregations in all five major continents. From 1974 until his passing, he lived most of the time in Atlanta, working with the Embry Hills congregation as an elder and evangelist. The members of the Embry Hills congregation became his family through the years, as did many other disciples throughout the world.
Visitation will be held Thursday evening, July 30, 2026, between 5 and 8PM at the McConnell Funeral Home in Athens, AL. There will not be a service here, but it will simply be a time for people from the North Alabama area to greet the Hall family.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 2-4 PM, at the Atlanta Northeast Century Marriott, 2000 Century Blvd, Atlanta, GA 30345, with Ben Hall (no relation) officiating. Sewell has requested that God’s grace be emphasized in any memorials, since he constantly emphasized it as his only hope and the only hope for mankind.
In lieu of flowers, Sewell and the family suggest that contributions be made to one of the Bible study camps, a similar group of your choosing, to a needy individual, or an evangelist.
