Frank Larry Majors, 81 of Lynchburg, Huntland and Sewanee, TN, passed away December 5, 2022, at his home in Nashville, TN
He was born May 23, 1941, in Lynchburg, TN, to the late Shirley and Elizabeth Majors
Larry was a graduate of Huntland High School, earned a BA from The University of the South, and holds a Masters degree from MTSU.
He taught History, Geography and Government for 40 years—primarily at South Junior High School and Franklin County High School. He coached football and was the head coach at Cumberland County High School, before he began his teaching and coaching career in Franklin County. He also coached football for several years alongside his father, Shirley Majors, at the University of the South.
Larry was known for his gift of storytelling, his unique travels, his love of reading— history, biography, and the newspaper–his style—especially in his colorful bow ties, his friendships among generations of people, and above all his loyalty to family and friends. His speed and toughness and quick feet contributed to an undefeated Sewanee football team in 1963.Those he taught and those he coached and those he played alongside recognized in him a man of incomparable character and compassion, a man who had much to teach about lessons in life.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winchester.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents: William and Ella Majors; John and Bessie Bobo; and his brothers: John Majors, Joe Majors, and Bill Majors
Survived by his wife, Lucy Majors; sister, Shirley Ann Majors Husband (Tom), Bob Majors (Michelle); step-children: Carrie Tinsley (Jeff); Gregory O’Neal (Karen), Grandchildren: Sarah, Tate, and Sawyer Tinsley; Ellarae, Henry, Bennett, and Sam O’Neal; many beloved nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Elizabeth and Shirley Majors Scholarship Fund at the University of the South or the charity of your choice.
Visitation for Larry will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, from 5:00pm – 8:00pm at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2022, at 1:00pm at All Saints Chapel with a reception following the service at Convocation Hall.
