Emma Kate Spurlin, age 93, passed away on August 15, 2026 at Robertsdale Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Robertsdale, Alabama.
She was born on August 6, 1933 in Covington County Alabama. She was married to her dear husband, Billy, for almost 72 years. She was blessed to be a stay-at-home mom and homemaker. She loved her family dearly and was always there for them. She volunteered as a room mother during her children’s early school years. Later she happily volunteered on the hostess committee at Shiloh Baptist Church and with Christmas Charities in Scottsboro, Alabama. She loved to cook. She became known among her grandchildren and their friends for her dill pickles and pimento cheese. She was an avid supporter of her grandchildren’s sports teams and spent many hours cheering them on with Billy.
Katie and Bill lived in Scottsboro, Alabama for 50 years. Health concerns led them to assisted living in Pensacola, Florida and Baldwin County, Alabama areas for the majority of the last five years of her life.
Katie is survived by her daughter, Ivan Whatley and her husband, Jack; Son Cliff Spurlin and his wife, Mona; grandson Justin Roberts and his wife, Connie; granddaughter Renee Spurlin Kornegay and her husband, Jason; great grandchildren Ethan Roberts, Ayden Roberts, Stella Kornegay, and Emmelyn Roberts; brother Don Pitts and his wife, Mary; brother-in-law Butch Spurlin and his wife, Gayle, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her Husband William Clifford Spurlin, parents John Jeremiah Pitts and Jettie Luvenia Mullis Pitts, brother Ray Pitts, sisters Virginia Jackson and Mildred Ellis, and Grandson Ian Roberts.
A Graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on August 20, 2026 at Pinehaven Memorial Gardens arranged by Rudder Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Shiloh Baptist Church, Scottsboro, Alabama in memory of Ian Roberts.
