Elaine Phelan Smith, 73, formerly of Montgomery, Alabama, died Tuesday, July 8, 2014, after an extended illness, in Huntsville, Alabama, at the home of her aunt, Ann Given Hopper.
Survivors in addition to her aunt, are her husband of 53 years, Lt. Col. (Ret. USAF) Robert “Bob” L. Smith; daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” Smith Wilkerson and husband, Lt. Col. (Ret. USAF) John L. Wilkerson; sister-in-law, Mrs. Roger E. (Michelle) Phelan, Jr.; and cousins; Charles Ewing Hopper, Jr., Nona Hopper Jones, Edward Given Hopper, and Carole Hopper Fandre. Preceding her in death were an infant son, Christopher Brenton Smith; parents, Brig. Gen. (Ret. USAF) Roger E. and Marjorie Given Phelan; brother, Maj. (Ret. USAF) Roger E. Phelan, Jr. and her maternal grandparents, Charles G. and Nona McMullen Given.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, July 13, 2014, in the McMullen-Given plot at Gurley Cemetery, Gurley, Alabama, with Chaplain Anthony Ford officiating. “Amazing Grace” will be played on the bagpipes. Reception will follow in Huntsville at the home of Mrs. Hopper.
