Eddie Ray Self

Mr. Eddie Ray Self There is no way to capture a man like Eddie Ray Self in a book, much less in an obituary. He was a simple man, but to his family, he was truly the best man.

Eddie was born July 13, 1955, in Huntsville and grew up in Big Cove with his parents, Shirley and James Self, and his sister, Vickie. He went on to build a life of his own, raising a large family and becoming a proud father, a grandfather, and a man who was known by everyone around him as someone they could count on.

An electrician by trade, Eddie genuinely loved his work and took immense pride in his knowledge. He taught several of his boys the trade, passing down a strong work ethic that his children carry with them today. Eddie worked hard, and could fix just about anything, and was usually the first person people called when they needed help.

But work was only part of who Eddie was. He loved his kids and grandkids dearly, and his silly side came out most around them. He was giving, dependable, stubborn, and sometimes impatient when he was ready to go. If he ever asked you to do something, you might’ve heard his famous, joking reminder: “Hurry up every chance you get.”

Eddie loved Alabama football, NASCAR, deer hunting, fishing, and dirt-track racing, and even spent some time racing cars himself. And if you ever walked into a room and saw a Double Cola sitting somewhere, you knew Eddie probably wasn’t far away.

He was a proud father of ten children and a grandfather to 27 grandchildren. There will never be enough words to explain what Eddie meant to his loved ones. When it comes down to it, they will cherish his memory and continue his legacy because to his family, he was the best man.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, August 28, 2026 at the Trading Post Cowboy Church with Brother Phillip Gilliland officiating. Burial will follow in the Camp Ground Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 27, 2026 beginning at 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Church.
