Dorothy Jean Wade Jones ended her earthly journey on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015. She was born in Florence, Alabama on June 30, 1928, to Alec Chisholm and Myrtle Kent Wade. She grew up in Florence attending schools including Gilbert Elementary and Coffee High School. She also attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Home from college one weekend, she met a handsome Navy boy home from the war, Verbon Jones. They married in December of 1947 and spent 49 years building a life together. Their marriage was blessed with four children.
Jean was a longtime member of College View Church of Christ in Florence.
Affectionately known as “Mimi” to her family and friends, she was the perfect example of a wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, friend, and Christian effectively modeling the “worthy woman” of Proverbs 31. Mimi was a wonderful homemaker who practiced hospitality with grace and ease. After her children were grown, she worked as office manager in her husband’s business, Jones Electric Company. Later still she was a familiar sales associate in the gift cellar at Rogers Department Store. Her love of people, her affection for her hometown, and her innate sense of style and good taste made her very successful in her late-life career.
Besides her parents, Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband, Verbon T. Jones, her brother, John William Wade, and her eldest grandchild, Jean Elizabeth Johnson.
She is survived by her children, Gail Jones Johnson (Jimmy), Verbon Jones Jr. (Pam), Ande Jones, and Beverly Jones Garner (Phil); grandchildren, Katie Johnson Mitchell (Bryan), Andrew C. Johnson (Martha Taylor), David Johnson, Jessica Johnson Brock (Ryan), Wade Jones (Starr), Brad Jones (Sarah), Libby Jones Joiner (Jeremy), Meg Garner, and Daniel Garner; great-grandchildren, Alex Jones, Anna Kate Jones, Tillman Jones, Brooks Jones, Maelee Joiner, Hayden Joiner, Cohen Joiner, Carson Joiner, Shelby Mitchell, Charlotte Mitchell, Sydney Mitchell, Drew Johnson, and Vivienne Johnson; brother-in-law, Leldon Jones (June); sister-in-law, Mary Joyce Jones; and a number of other loved ones. Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
A celebration of Mimi’s life will be Saturday morning, Feb. 21, at Greenview Memorial in Florence. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to noon with a funeral service beginning at 12:15 p.m. Minister of College View Church of Christ, Kenny Moorer, will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenview Cemetery.
The family expresses appreciation and love for caregivers and helpers, Linda Bland and Donia Ledford. Also, thanks to Dr. Robert Mann, Dr. Sean Rhuland, Elder Care, and the many health care workers who lovingly cared for our mother.
“I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:11-13
