Doris James Jernigan – Obituary

Doris James Jernigan, 74, gained her wings peacefully on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Diversicare in Amory, Ms. after a four year battle against Alzheimer Disease. Doris  was born August 18, 1943 in Hurricane Creek, AL to the late Everett Ray James and Mable Askew James. The oldest of seven children, she loved to tell the stories of their childhood. She attended Vina High School where she completed the ninth grade. She was a factory worker for many years, working at Blue Bell, Red Bay, AL, Itawamba Mfg., Tremont, Ms., Johnston & Murphy, Fulton, MS., E.R. Carpenter, Pontotoc, MS and KwikSac, Fulton, MS. In 1997, Doris married the love of her life, Jimmy Jernigan. Through their years together, they enjoyed the life of camping and she enjoyed her family to the fullest. In addition to raising her children and grandchildren, she enjoyed her love and passion for her flower gardens and hummingbirds. She was a person who loved helping others, whether she knew them or not. Her love of gospel music was amazing and one of her all time favorite hymns was I’ll Fly Away. A few weeks ago, she said she was going to fly, fly high and that she is. She was a very active and devoted member of Providence Baptist Church in Tremont, Ms. where she served as secretary and enjoyed being a member of the Ladies Group.

Services will be Saturday, October 14, 1 p.m. at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Red Bay, Al. with Bro. Jeff Lentz and Mike Deaton officiating. Burial will be in Burnout Cemetery, Vina, Al. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, Al. will be in charge of arrangements.

Survivors are her husband – Jimmy Jernigan; three daughters – Amanda Hammock (Doug) Red Bay, AL, Debra Sloan (Randy) Amory, MS and Gloria Jarrell, Fulton, MS; three step-children – Joe Jernigan (Kris) Houston, MS, Bryant Jernigan (Lorie) Hernando, MS and Terri George Saltal, West Point, MS; brothers and sisters – Brenda Turbyfill, Mary Eastep, Janice Loden, Sonny James, Troy James and Foy James; ten grandchildren – Zac Hunt, Ana’grace Hunt, Beth Hunt, Courtney Irvin, Heather Martinez, Chase Jarrell, Tabatha Rogers, Briana Rogers, Tyler Burt and Jordan Sloan; twelve step-grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews and her precious lil fur baby, Bell.

Doris is reunited with her parents, an infant son, her aunt Maggie Bell, a host of aunts and uncles, fur baby Shadow and many more loved ones in Heaven. What celebration in the clouds.

Pallbearers will be Zac Hunt, Tyler Burt, Chase Jarrell, Cole Jernigan and Justin Jernigan. Honorary pallbearers will be Nicholas Rogers, Justin Rogers, Matthew Irvin, Steven Martinez, the Alzheimer Care Unit, nurses, doctors and staff at Diversicare and all the men and women who are still fighting Alzheimer Disease.

Visitation will be Saturday, October 14, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL.
